My Lifestyle Plan

Lifestyle as Medicine

Who wouldn’t want to grow old in good health and look back on a happy life from which they’ve made the most? The reality is that 83% of people do not feel their lives are healthy, fulfilling or happy. This is despite the fact that we live in a society with living standards that are higher than ever before, such as good hygiene, sufficient food, clean drinking water and access to healthcare and education. We have, in fact, a wealth of opportunities to learn, grow, succeed and get the most out of ourselves.

However, this ‘progress’ has a downside that threatens our health and well-being. We are surrounded by abundance, opportunities and temptations that no longer have anything to do with our natural needs. There is less need to exercise, unhealthy food is readily available and is even promoted in adverts, we are inundated with stimuli, feel we lack time and can no longer find peace of mind.

These negative influences are more powerful than you might think. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), lifestyle-related diseases are currently responsible for around 70% of deaths worldwide, and it is predicted that 80% of health problems can be prevented or treated through lifestyle changes: a healthy lifestyle as medicine! However, it is like ‘swimming against the tide’ because it requires you to live in tune with your natural needs in a society that is not geared towards this.

The “My Lifestyle Plan” short questionnaire provides insight into how you manage yourself. As you have seen, the questions are not only about the physical aspects (sleep, diet, exercise) but also about the balance between stress and recovery, about feeling connected, about how you cope with life (your resilience) and about making choices that align with your values. It is important to realise that your body and mind work together. If something goes wrong in how you manage yourself, physically or mentally, you lose your balance and may develop symptoms. That does not mean that something is broken. With the right approach, you can regain your vitality and resilience.
